Persistence

Jeanee Bernek enrolled in college in 1971. Forty years later, she earned an associate degree in business at the age of 81. “I made it, it’s a good feeling,” said Bernek after the commencement at Community College of Vermont.

Bernek and her husband raised a family while running a store.

“I sort of had to put things on the back burner, I knew we had a lot work ahead of us, and I thought eventually I would get back to my classes,” she said.

After selling the store in 2004, Bernek decided to return to college.

“It’s just self satisfaction and you are learning all the time and you meet wonderful people and make friends with the other students. It’s very enjoyable,” said Bernek.

Students welcomed the great-grandmother. Bernek plans to begin working on a bachelor’s degree and eventually a master’s degree.
