Students try Rent-A-Text

Gateway Community College in Connecticut hopes to cut students’ book costs in half with Rent-A-Text, launched in collaboration with Follett Higher Education Group,  reports the Hartford Courant.

The cost of textbooks has increased significantly in recent years with the average student paying between $200 and $600 a semester for new books. The Rent-A-Text program is administered by Follett, which runs the bookstores on GCC’s Long Wharf and North Haven campuses. To participate, students register online at www.rent-a-text.com and may rent their textbooks either through the web site or in person at the store.

Students will have the option of renting new or used books. They will pay for the rentals at the start of the semester and return the books on the last day of final exams.

Students will be able to highlight material, but not to write in books excessively, break the spines or otherwise damage the book so that it may not be re-used.
