Who can offer associate degrees?

Southeast Missouri State University wants to award associate degrees. Nearby Three Rivers Community College says:  Hey! That’s our job. The two-year college is trying to block Southeast’s plan, reports Inside Higher Ed.

At some Southeast campuses, most students transfer to complete a bachelor’s degree. “We’ve been operating like a community college for more than 20 years,” provost Ronald Rosati said. “It’s just that we’ve never had the authority to award associate degrees.”  Southeast is especially interested in offering a two-year nursing degree, which is in high demand.

Three Rivers says the demand can be met by its own branch campuses, which it proposes to expand. “Southeast Missouri’s plan is definitely mission creep and market gobbling,” said Devin Stephenson, president at Three Rivers.
