Why Obama will miss 2020 goal

President Obama will miss his goal of making the U.S. first in the world in college completion by 2020, predicts Richard Whitmire of Why Boys Fail. The goal can’t be reached without males and nobody’s talking about why so many boys aren’t doing well in school and going on to college.

If Obama and the national foundations dedicated to boosting college attainment rates want to make progress toward the 2020 goal they can start by knocking down the de facto moratorium they maintain on acknowledging the gender gaps. The DOE has not issued a single study on the gender gaps. And it’s possible to read through an entire college attainment report by the Gates or Lumina foundations and see not a word on the topic.

. . . Just recently the Schott Foundation released a report on the plight of black males and never got around to comparing black males to black females.

Young men are less likely to earn a college degree than their fathers’ generation, according to the Minorities in Higher Education report by the American Council on Education.

Women, who are more likely to earn a degree than their mothers, outnumber men nearly 3-to-2 in the college population. The gender gap is growing, the report finds.

Combining both sexes, the overall college completion rate for young and old is virtually the same — 38 percent among the young and 37 percent among the old.

It will be hard to raise the percentage of college-educated adults without improving the success rate of the male half of the population.
