English professors teach vampire lit

Vampire lit is motivating remedial students at Cabrillo College on the California coast, reports the San Jose Mercury News. English and reading instructor Jeanette Richey “noticed that students who shunned books the way vampires avoid sunlight were tearing through the Twilight trilogy.”

Richey teamed with Cabrillo English instructor Joseph Carter to create a learning community in which students take Richey’s reading class and Carter’s composition class concurrently, with coordinated assignments.

The Twilight novels aren’t well-written, Carter concedes, but students move on to Dracula, a Victorian classic that’s challenging for students reading below the college level.
